To discover and support talented young artists, Songeun Art Foundation has been established in 1989. In 2001, the foundation opened the Songeun Art Award and has turned out excellent winners. This year, 12th Songeun Art Award selected 4 artists among 572 applicants, and these artists will be judged by the upcoming exhibition.
Jeong Ki Baek (b.1981) has held 5 solo exhibitions, and constantly researched a meaning of material and our idea surrounding it. In this time, he exhibits a project 'Is of', which focuses on a relationship between a property of matter and recreated image of it, and shows a reality suggested by the artist. With ink extracted by pigment of maple leaves, he printed out a landscape of Mt. Seorak, and it makes a gap between a subject and image of it dimly. As suggesting a image of maple leaf which we understand ideologically by element of leaf, this work is another meaning of reality which has an image and corporeality.
Bo Hyun Yoon (b.1975) has studied glass art and held 6 solo exhibitions in Korea, Japan and U.S. The artist has researched how to express a meaning of life and interests through attributes of medium itself. This exhibition shows exploration of communication in various ways through glass, and also expresses the artist's experiences in his life and ego metaphorically. The artist makes us synaesthetic experience characteristic of shadow glass, and expresses moment and the frailty of our lives through sound, shadow, light and illusion.
Sun Choi (b.1973) has concentrated on contemporary issues and interests, and used unusual mediums. He give questions about essence and meaning of art, and ambiguousness of a dichotomous gap between artistic and unartistic thing. Using shadowing materials, the artist exhibits 4 installation works showing contrary concepts, painting and non-paintigng, art and non-art.
Tae Bum Ha (b.1974) has recreated horrible sights of natural disaster or a war based on 'Actuality', making and photographing a model of scene, or 'Imagination' way, photographing a model with his subjective thinking. He said "Image of a news photograph cannot cover full account of real accident. Even spectacle image is an object of consumption, and inner image of consumer who looks at it can be another fiction."
