The Page Gallery is delightful to introduce the first solo exhibition of Markus Lupertz, the great master in Germany. Markus Lupertz is the leader of neo-expressionism in Germany, and since working from Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1988, he has showed a large number of art works internationally. He is one of the most influential contemporary artists to young German artists.
Markus Lupertz opposed 'abstractionism' of painting, and tried to find essence of it with a slogan 'painting for painting, enthusiastic painting'. And as a way to deliver his intense and emotional subjectivity, he recreated simple motif, like portrait or myth, as a basic idea. After this, he has pursued own style covering from abstract to representational. Selecting configurationality to express the inner world and attempting to resurrect painterliness represent why he is called as the pioneer of neo-expressionism.
Art works in neo-expressionism are vary but have common traits. In terms of composition, it refuses a traditional norm, but reflects modern values with a spontaneous meaning. Also, neo-expressionism tries to establish individual symbol system, so that it uses universal metaphor beyond religion and thought.
In this exhibition, his overall art making will be introduced, including painting series since 1980s, About Three Graces, Nude Back and Pastoral Thoughts series after 2000.
