Location: Gana Contemporary
Artist(s): IM Sun Iy, KWON Inkyung, HAN Joyoung
Date: 13 Jan - 30 Jan 2011

GAna Now Art, a biennial contest launched in 2005, is a Gana Art's special project to discover promising artists who will play a significant role in Korean art and to foster them. AN Sekweon, LEE Jieun, and JEONG Zikseong won the first contest in 2005. CHOI Jiyoung was selected in the 2nd contest of 2007. KWON Inkyung, IM Suniy, and HAN Joyoung gained honors in the 3rd contest of 2009.

GAna Now Art gives us a foothold to evaluate past and present work of the selected artists and to predict what will change in their work. Gana completes its project with holding an award exhibition 2 years after selecting the artists.

Since the three artists were selected in 2009, they have resided in Gana Art Jangheung Atelier, developed their art and been recognized with their performance, such as prominent exhibitions and solo shows, for two years. The is not only the exhibition to complete the 3rd GAna Now Art, but also the stage to monitor how much their work has made progress.

KWON Inkyung, IM Suniy, and HAN Joyoung express their own unique languages toward the world as they use different medium and material in their works. KWON Inkyung is characterized by collage which is made with antique books as a material. For the artist was born in the city and has spent most of her life there, she is aware that “the city has turned into an emotional space where human's consciousness is wholly reflected as varied aspects of human life accumulate on the urban space". As the urban space is combined with her daily life, urban buildings and between alleys are thought of 'a space with emotions' of value.

HAN Joyoung, who likewise deals with the urban scape, focuses on the city nightscape in particular. The artist uses bright-colored adhesive tape for his work and creates the city nightscape with it. For him, the urban nightscape is "an ambivalent view that looks fascinating and causes fear at the same time". Traces of life, which are found in a glimmer of light in the dark, arouses his lonesomeness and solitude. His fear and anxiety become maximized, being contrasted with the bright colored adhesive stickers reminiscent of artificial lights.

IM Suniy worked on contour maps with plater or graph paper before, but she has used digital collage in recent works. A flower is a subject for Im Sun Iy to get through a question on visual awareness. She takes photos of a flower vase and flower's revolution by a 360 degree and the images are combined. The subject resulting from is recognized "to be concluded perceptively vagueness but to be true" and innumerable overlaps of subjects are to realize idea in reality.

These three artists, who had nothing in common, have developed their art under the intersection, GAna Now Art. Their rendezvous is a triangle where the potential and dynamism of Korean promising artists cohere.
