Igor Stravinsky, the great composer, opened up a new horizon for neoclassicism with his subversive work 'The Rite of Spring'. This year marks the 100th anniversary of his acclaimed first performance in Champs-Elysées Paris, given by the timeless dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. The sincerity of these works of art touched many people's hearts then and now, transcending genre and time.
Opera Gallery Seoul welcomes the new spring of 2013 with an exhibition of masterpieces featuring over 60 beautiful and vital paintings and sculptures that defied the conventions of the time. Generations later, these works are still recognised as masterpieces. From Dufy's bright decorative colours and rhythmic lines, to Picasso's presentation of primitive vitality, as well as Chagall's reality depicted as phantasm with splendid colours, and Magritte's sculpture (to be introduced to Korea for the first time), Dali's unique imagery of dream and mystery, Buffet's recognition as a painter and his superseding of Andy Warhol, all the way to Arman's intentional disordered use of broken, daily objects, one can acknowledge all the above as a compelling spring awakening.
