The third 'Esthetics of Layer' exhibition starts from controversy about the balance between tradition and identity which has been discussed in Korean art. Korean painting has focused on expression media. Return to traditional media and techniques or extension on new form have been suggested. Selecting materials and techniques show the spirit of art but it was ignored.
In this exhibition, selected artists have well known as experiments of 'Jangji', Korean paper, to overcome a problem the Korean painting has.
To use 'Jangji', an artist should paint several times to earn wanted color in a process of work. Painting on 'Jangji' needs patience and delicacy, and layered colors, dots, lines and plains form various spectrum in terms of each artist's individual skill.
In 1940, Yoo Sup Ko said 'Tradition is considered as unchangeable and universal, but it should be interpreted with the times'. And in 1984, Kyoung Sup Lee said 'We should call as 'Korean painting' first, which was called as Oriental painting, and find out concerted concept and meaning'.
'Esthetics of Layer' includes the spirit of the times, reinterpretation of traditional value, and provides one's composure in a life to find true ego.
