The solo exhibition of Kim Sooja, an active media and performance artist predominantly working in New York, will be held in Atelier Hermes. In this exhibition, the artist, who has explored the origin of life through previous works such as Bottari and A Needle Woman, features a new media work where the organic relationship between the four elements that she believes make up the earth’s basic materials, Earth, Water, Fire, Air, are ex- pressed through natural colors.
Kim had her first solo exhibition in 2000 at Rodin Gallery and this exhibition, which is her second in Korea after a ten year gap, screens Earth-Water-Fire-Air, a media work composed of seven independent channels running video clips of scenes from the volcanic activities at Lanzarote Island located in the Canary Islands of Spain and the landscapes of active volcanoes in Pa-caya, Guatemala. The scarlet lava of active volcanoes, the dark blue waves of the sea, and the crystal clear sky are captured in the media through the camera and the images portray live moments with vibrant colors, reminding one of a painterly work.
