DOOSAN Artist Award the 3rd Recipients
by Doosan Gallery
Location: Doosan Gallery Seoul
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 19 Nov - 31 Dec 2014

DOOSAN Gallery Seoul is pleased to present the group exhibition of Sangdon Kim, Ji Eun Kim, and CHANG Jia from November 19, 2014 to December 31, 2014. The three artists are the recipients of the 3rd DOOSAN Artist Award in 2012, which was established in 2010 to support outstanding Korean artists in the fine and performing arts. Sangdon Kim, Ji Eun Kim, and CHANG Jia participated in the DOOSAN Residency New York and held solo exhibitions at DOOSAN Gallery New York in the spring of 2014. This "DOOSAN Artist Award the 3rd Recipients' Group Exhibition" will present the changing trajectories of the three artists based on their experiences as participants in the New York residency program.

During his residency in New York, Sangdon Kim presented the Antenna series, in which he created objects in the image of masses of fragmented object-human-tools that stand and rely on each other to mutually transmit and receive linking signals. Thereafter, having witnessed a succession of incidents arising in Korea that included the Sewol Ferry Incident and the sudden appearance of sinkholes, the artist created the Monument Zero series, in which he constructed and then photographed monuments paradoxically symbolizing absence. Through the Snout Nebula series, which is presented in this exhibition, the viewers are able to examine his interest in and explorative process regarding the flexibility of time and space, an inquiry that continues on the path initially proposed by Antenna and Monument Zero.

Ji Eun Kim utilizes paintings and installations to depict images of construction sites that are speedily built and then discarded due to urban development and radical city growth. The installation work Versatile Container Project series, which is presented in this exhibition, uses the image of shipping containers that are used for multiple purposes such as buildings, freight transport, and barricades to embody an urban landscape where an endless cycle of development and demolition is underway.
Using the medium of human bodies CHANG Jia expresses the taboos of society in performance, photography, video, and installation. She creates artworks where antithetical sentiments such as pain and pleasure, violence and beauty coexist as a means to reflect on the latent instincts within human beings. This exhibition presents the leather drawing series that CHANG has worked on over the last three years, one in which she utilizes hot irons to brand images and sentences into animal skins. These drawings, imprinted with heat into soft leather surfaces, paradoxically expose everyday taboos that exist but are not easily revealed if one does not pay sufficient attention.
