Location: Vit Gallery
Artist(s): RYU Ho Yeol
Date: 24 Mar - 11 Apr 2011

Everything is something new and novelty to children. A chair can become backpack and a cross can become airplane to them. Because it is the open meaning that doesn’t have its own use and purpose. So a chair becomes a backpack and they have new relations with the chair. Frederick Nietzsche wrote the children are naïve, oblivion, new beginning, a game, a wheel going round by itself and first movement. Therefore the children have pure creative pleasure. We can see the creative pleasure to Ryu, Ho Yeol’s work.

The artist uses all possible media such as photography, video and 3-dimensional artworks. His work begins from the computer work. He made 3-dimensional things in computer such as chair, car, airplane and almost everything we can see. They look like the kids’ objects that don’t have fixed meaning. The chair and the car have the same shape we know but the different use. He made hill (Huegel, 2011) and man (Mensch, 2011) used them. The things in the hill (Huegel, 2011) don’t have its own character. It is a part of the hill. In the other words, they are not the chair we sit and the car we drive anymore.

There are his video works in the same position. Video works recall an image in a monitor. However his video works are also important the device to show an image. So he creates both software and hardware. His video work is a small monitor, speakers and a main board on an acrylic signboard. They are not parts of the work. They become a meaning of the work. To him, every work is a process to erase a meaning and to create new meaning at the same time

His work is revolutionary because of making new meaning of things. But it is not a dark and heavy like a normal revolutionary work. And he doesn’t force you to obtain the new meaning. So, you can enjoy his work. He wants you to make new meaning for yourself not to be locked up in the world he made. It is also a process inducing audiences to continuously create with him.
