Visible Rhythms
by Vit Gallery
Location: Vit Gallery
Artist(s): KIM Sang Yoon
Date: 7 Jul - 26 Jul 2011

“I have expressed rhythms through stripes and colors. I play music composed as lines and colors on canvas.”(Artist’s note)

It is not seeing but hearing that Kim, Sangyoon wants to express. He expresses visible sound through colors. His work succeed to J. Whistler, W. Kandinsky, and P. Mondrian that studied sound as new problem that was different from existing study of painting. Kim, Sangyoon’s sound is expressed as stripes. We can feel the rhythms by various colors of the stripes. He paints a musical score through colors like a composer.

The strips are tapering off. It is like a sound turned down. And there is the white light at its end. The light is not only the point of ending the sound but also the point of making new sound, because new color and sound start behind it. It is like a break between movements of a symphony. In that sense, the white space has various meanings. It is a place of inner healing and a place of creation. However, why does he focus on a sound?

G. Deleuze said that sound gets particularity when it becomes deterritorialization but color dissolves when it becomes deterritorialization. Deterritorialization means getting out of own position and condition. That is, a sound becomes more polished and free as getting out of its own position. However a color doesn’t have any meaning when it gets out of its form. In other words, a sound makes new value and meaning but a color loses its own things as getting out of own condition.

So, G. Deleuze divides into realistic world (see world) and potential world (sound world). He said a sound world stimulates more our emotion, because emotion is close to the potential layer. This potential of a sound, it is the reason he draws a sound in his work. At the same time, there is a meaning in this point.

He added a potential to a reality as giving the potential rhythms in the realistic color. And he is not staying the see world but trying to extend the sense through drawing a sound in his work. So, we can see his work and hear his work at the same time. That is, his trial is a struggle to pass over the visual limit.
