Star Wars Episode 6
by UNC Gallery
Location: UNC Gallery
Artist(s): GROUP SHOW
Date: 21 Feb - 15 Mar 2013

Stawards episode 6, which has been introducing remarkable artists, opens in this February. This year, Starwars episode 6 introduces Soyeon Kim, Jieun Yoon, Michael Anthony Simon, the artists who explore various mediums through paintings, installations, and sculptures. Through this exhibition, UNC gallery aims to look into the 'soft heart under a stern exterior' of people with different point of views and ruminated portraits of us who live with the intentional indifference by the wound of anxiety today.

The Paintings of Soyeon Kim mainly carry the exposure of the scenes to our eyes and disasters we often run into today by the media. Kim mostly works based on the scrap images from internet or newspapers, and these images are re-interpreted on canvas. The sense they give to the viewers is remote, and it is because she re-interprets the scenes from media without any emotions, and sees them with an attitude of bystander who faces these scenes as a factoid.

The sculptures of Jieun Yoon are like a straight speech. Facing the front without avoiding one's eyes and intentionally looking directly with the sharp attention to hide its weak inner side seem to be an expression for a self-defense. One of her pieces, 'Observer', stands with its hands in its pockets, hiding its entire face with a round and bulging mask. This child-sized sculpture seems inattentive, but it also seems like it is hiding the real figure by using the mask as a shield.

The installations of Michael Anthony Simon seem like glooming optical fiber is entangled, but in fact, they are spider webs that the actual spiders weaved. Simon, who actually catches spiders to make them weave the webs for the art pieces, uses fixing sprays to make it more solid and finishes it with coloring. he often uses bright fluorescent colors, which not only arouse dreamlike and arcane mood but also make viewers to experience visual noise by a combination of the intensely bright colors.

Soyeon Ki, Who re-interprets disasters with the attitude of by-stander, Jieun Yoon, hiding the inner side with the appearance of observer, Michael Anthony Simon, who completes one of the most fragile materials, with many layers and splendid color coats...all the works of these three artists, introduced through Starwars episode 6, resemble people living today.
