Artist(s): Kyungsoo BYUN
Date: 15 Nov - 7 Dec 2012
Kyungsoo Byun's new work 'Hood-y' is staring at the concrete floor with unpredictable face. 'Plastic bag man' which reminds of our daily life is also looking at you as from head to foot and blue plastic bag are in a body. Sculptures looking at you or the floor are the appearance of us who isolated in this world. All Byun's works have no face expression. Face with losing identity leaves a possibility of imagination between artwork and audience. Most obvious hint the artist wants to tell to audience is their gesture. A clenched fist, Head bowed, hands in pocket… he said he focused on expression of delicate changes of body from gesture. This chage is hard to be recognized clearly but it helps audience understand a flow of gesture on the whole. Unlike his first solo exhibition, which consists of bright colours, gesture with liveness, and humors works, new works give a feeling of heaviness and seriousness with understate gesture, and dark tone. In his solo exhibition, we can be an observer, not a bystander who pass by another group of people, communicate with artworks and feel lightness or heaviness the sculptures have.
