Dae-Kwan Kim has held the first solo exhibition in Korea in 2010, and this is the third one at Philip Kang Gallery.
He has developed 'glass painting' in earnest, and combined it with 'painting on cavas'.
He is fascinated by 'transparency' a glass has. Unlike painting on canvas, an opaque material, but painting glass colour on the glass panel keeps transparent regardless of number of glasses. Glass painting has exclusive attractive elements, such as transparent characteristic, fantastic colours after it baked, and changes of colours in terms of penetration of light.
He is inspired by flowing river or waves and glowing sands at a beach. He describes lines for wave and its trace, and dots for light reflected on water or sands. Layered colours embrace spectrum of colours and it touches our inner mind. Thus, painting on canvas is more abstract than glass painting. A monotone scene looks like a part of minimalism, at the same time lyrical feeling indicates post-minimalism.
Through the painting, the artist reflects his good old memories for hometown on the river. His painting makes the audience stand in front of the longing river.
