PYO Gallery South currently presents a solo exhibition by the photographer, Sabin Pearlman, for the first time in Korea. The artist makes an essence of an object ambiguously and beautiful visually through photograph.
Born in Austria, Pearlman moved to Los Angeles in 2004, now works and lives there. As the artist with great attention recently, she emphasize visual beauty to express original essence of the object unclearly. She got a prize from Lens Culture Emerging Photographer Award with AMMO series in 2013.
AMMO series consists of artworks with good quality taken in a defense bunker in Switzerland in 2012. The whole series is composed of 900 images depicting a cross section of ammos in different sizes and shapes. Ammo is a explosive so that cutting it off is very dangerous unless asking for an expert. The artist could have help from the person and implement at the defense bunker in Switzerland. As seeing the object which is a cause of terror and sorrow from it, the audience can enjoy beauty of ammo. The cross section eveals hidden complication contrary to its destructive purpose, and beauty at the same time. This is unsightliness and beauty, which is a depiction for the human condition.
MISC series shows Pearlman's streamlined and contemporary point of view. Simplicity has been her classic style. The shape is simple and humorous expression.
Pearlman did not make ammo reveal any names or purposes. As hiding title or label about each type, period or use, the artist protects ambiguity and anonymity, and makes people see visual beauty only.
