Day of Confidence
by Art Space Pool
Location: Alternative Space Pool
Date: 16 Apr - 25 May 2010

For principles of circulation
that I am very well aware of
I felt fatigue,
Also knowing
I’ll be fatigued eternally
Without looking back the past
I find my confidence instead of grief and beauty
Today must be the day of confidence after all

It is I who create the fatigue
It is I who create the confidence
Then, isn’t my body a flower
Growing up an inch more?
Today must be the day of confidence after all.
The day of confidence, calling in pleasure
All grief becomes one, and everything returns to the grief
This must be the day of confidence.
This is my day
The day I grow

The Late Kim Su-young (1921-1968)
‘Day of Confidence’ (1955.2)

art space pool(hereafter pool) announces the opening
of <Day of Confidence>.

<Day of Confidence> is the 2010 season opening exhibition of pool, introducing the expanded and re-designed space and programs with newly appointed director (Kim Hee-jin, former curator of Insa Art Space, Arts Council Korea), as announcing the dual-opening with art space ccul (representative Choi Jung-hwa), aligning a new curatorial partner of pool. On April 16th, the aspiring exhibition <Day of Confidence> explores six evolving chapters; a space renovation project, an archive project, performance events, the Masil Talk at both sites in a string, pool in Gugi-dong and ccul in Hannam-dong.

Reflecting the historical enterprise pool has built so far for over a decade, 2010 pool starts its new chapter by questioning if there is any confidence of creation left for artists and cultural producers in the realm of institutionalized cultural capital and a market-led economy. And after all, where can innovators and organizations find the confidence? Who is keeping and creating this confidence? What kind of and in which way should artists and art organizations build their relationship each other to enhance the confidence? Then, how can the confidence be protected and sustained to be empowered in this society? By answering these questions, pool is opening its physical space, artist community, organizational agenda, archive and institutional network, of all which become the ‘context’ of an organization, for stimulating the mechanism of inter-connecting, sharing, interactive and self-reliance between individual subjects.

The main work of <Day of Confidence> in pool of Gugi-dong is the ‘HAHAHA(下下下 low low low) Project’ (Kwon Yong-joo, Kim Sang-don, Kim Sang-jin, Lee Soo-sung, Choi Jung-hwa). The ‘HAHAHA(下下下 low low low) Project’ is the space renovation project for recovering old but sustainable daily environment of art space in contrast with the standard-oriented development plan which absolutely disguises the memory of space and time. Over the last winter, the project artists restored the original look of pool by using recycling, DIY and low-tech methods to peel the white cube structure. The newly born space is now having surrounding friendly atmosphere and inter-relates with the environmental context. Organically interconnecting the hidden spots, the pool space flows through the neighboring vacant at every corners.

It has already been ten years that pool has sustained itself as one of rare artists-run contemporary art spaces as a cultural producers community. <Day of Confidence> therefore introduces two archive projects by ps and Lee Jia, which reconstruct the artists community and collections of archive at pool and connects its idea of the contemporary context to be shared. This is beyond the boundaries of the context , but rather leads to be aware of an issue: how the imagination and experimentation of creative subjects and the critical language reins in the realistic system. Beyond an institutionalized boundary, this leads to the critical awareness how can the art imagination, experimentation and language of creators restraint the utilitarianism and quantitative evaluation of the language used by society.

Based on its communal relationship, pool is pleased to present the power generated from a spiritual inheritance of organizational tradition, such as artists community and collections of archive. With the season opening of pool, a new curatorial partner, the ‘ccul 꿀(means honey)’ opens. Located in Hannam-dong, ccul is a kind of organic space where bar, cafe, studio, ‘ccul pool’(꿀풀 means honey grass, pool’s experimental art project space) and Gaseum lounge interconnects each other for co-existing. Ccul intersects visual art, architecture, design and performance, just like proliferous bacteria. This “living collective activity”, which comes beyond the boundary between art, creation and everyday life scene, triggers the productive meaning between process, encounters, sharing and coexistence, rather than focusing on the result only. Ccul is going to embrace the experiments of cultural producers who search for alternative from the disconnected structure between art activities, livelihoods, everyday life’s citizen and artists.

Aligning a curatorial partnership for following two years, pool organizes the “ccul pool” project space in ccul. In every 6 months, 5-6 artist individuals or teams are going to be invited for the “ccul pool project”, which aims at self-management space network of artists themselves. For the opening, there are 7 artist teams and artists. from the 1st stage of ccul pool project and 4 artists invited by ccul.

In addition, there are the opening show by andeath, the Masil Talk inviting local and international artists and curators, and a new bilingual homepage with new Institution’s Identity and a yearlong international network program “Transversal” of pool will be started.
