Eisenstein Montage - Film and Cooking
by Brain Factory
Location: Brain Factory
Artist(s): Youngho LEE
Date: 1 Sep - 17 Sep 2011

Eisenstein Montage is a cooperative project attempting to make a new creation through a combination of artists from different genres motivated by the Montage theory of Eisenstein. S.M. Eisenstein (1898-1948), a Russian theorist of Montage argued that new meanings are created dialectically when two shots collide. In other words, shots are not just linked but they collide, and the spectators are not just passive viewers who merely accept images rather they play the role of communal creators.Based on this theory, the exhibition Eisenstein Montage ruminates on the livelihood and history of humankind, and on our culture of today through a prism of food, tracing the relationship between western art history and food from ancient to modern times. Music and image function differently in various types of media. Like diverse ingredients in food, each sound and image shows a unique nature according to the cooking methods, or arrangements and situations. In his exhibition, Park Minjune ' s music sometimes explains situations with a traditional soundtrack technique or shows kitschy backgrounds. Upon occasion, he even reproduces cooking process with sounds arranging and trimming. A cooking demonstration by Baek Sangjoon displays the sublime identity of the ‘ food culture ' that has predominated each period by showing time-consuming preparation and cooking process. Lee Youngho brings up the music and cooking into her film and shows the path of the food had created our culture of humanity. There will be spectacular performance held by famous Minjune Park(A.K.A. DJ Soulscape) and rising star gourmet chef Sang-joon Baek.
