Interpreters
by Gaain Gallery
Location: Gaain Gallery
Artist(s): Kyungwoo CHUN
Date: 25 Apr - 31 May 2013

The artist Kyungwoo Chun's exhibition will be held at Gaain Gallery in four years. This exhibition will show 3 photograph series produced in Germany and Spain, a video, an installation, and performance at the opening reception.
Kyungwoo Chun has worked in minimal expression as calling attention to a sense of recognition, through self-conscious experience of time and introspection for a relationship, with various people living in different cultural area. His interest in a man and the world through 'photography' was started from essentiality of photo and another possibility of it.

Especially, the artist focuses on misunderstanding and creative image from difference between memories and interpretation, and searches esthetic possibility by coincidence and inevitability. Interpretation is observable truth in terms of 'activity finding a meaning' but not neither a problem of right and wrong like description nor evaluation. 'Interpreters' series is about 'a process to find a meaning' through photos or simple action, and also 'another meaning' the audience can find out through completed photo works.

Interpreters, 2011-2013
This work started as 10 European artists got unsigned portraits in an early age of Korean photography, about 100 years ago. Those artists were required to recreate them, which are hard to be recognized according to cultural differences. And recreated paintings are reborn as photos, which tells that encounter of 'people in original photos, a photographer for them, the painters and Kyungwoo Chun' is concluded as one photo beyond 100 years.
