Girl with Hands
by Gallery Koyanagi
Location: Gallery Koyanagi
Artist(s): Michaƫl BORREMANS
Date: 11 Jan - 1 Mar 2014

Gallery Koyanagi is pleased to present a solo exhibition 'Girl with Hands' by Belgian artist, Michaël Borremans. Born in 1963, Michaël Borremans works and lives in Ghent. Since the mid of 1990s, he has held solo exhibitions at museums and galleries in the world. His works are collected in major museums of the world including MOMA New York and Museum of Modern Art City of Paris. Also, he created an installation consisting of paintings in a room of the royal palace in Brussels by request of Belgian royal family in 2010. In Japan, he has opened the solo exhibition at Gallery Koyanagi, and submitted a piece to Yokohama Triennale in 2011.

Reminding of Flandre painting, his work with elaborate technique raises a quite time and mysterious atmosphere. People placed in the painting sometimes focus on meaningless work or action. Such scenery looks realistic as well as gives an extraordinary impression like a film or a stage set so that it touches the audience standing between the real and virtual world. Recently, he broadens creative activity to movie work.

This is the second solo exhibition at Gallery Koyanagi, and it will consist of the series of single subject only. Eight paintings of a girl concentrating on insignificant handcraft have different poses, drawing methods, stroke, a condition of light, a flow of time and a psychological distance between a girl and the audience so that those offer surprising and abundant variations. Also, new film under the same theme adds deep and peaceful art world on them.

At the same time, his solo exhibition will be held at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art. his  30 major works will be on view. Also, in February, his ink drawings will be showed at Kyoto University of Art and Design Gallery and Ryosokuin.
