"sagacho archives COLLECTION plus," an exhibition series tells the story of contemporary art history in Japan. It is not only a summary of activities and art collections of Sagacho Exhibit Space (1983-2000) but also an input of new elements. The second showcase presents Rei Naito.
A solo exhibition by Naito was held at Sagacho Exhibit Space in 1991, titled: une place sur la Terre. It was an installation of delicately crafted objects inside a tent in the exhibition space. It was one of her remarkable works and served as an introduction to her art direction thereafter. The main theme of the exhibition was a search for the answer to the question 'Living on Earth, the reality itself, being blessed?' In recent years, Naito has put more effort into creating places for 'things' to meet 'Nature'. In this showcase, 10 special drawings from "une place sur la Terre" installation provided by the Sagacho Collection will be shown with a new piece. This will be a great chance to meet once again those over 20 year old valuable drawings together with her latest work. Looking forward to seeing you at the exhibition.
An enterprise being undertaken to weave the story of Contemporary Art History in Tokyo while at the same time studying the activities and the art collections of Sagacho Exhibit Space, known as an "alternative space" which was formerly located in the Koto-ku Shokuryo Building (ex-rice market facility) up until the year 2000.
