Luminescence...
by Tomio Koyama Gallery Tokyo
Location: 8/ ART GALLERY/ Tomio Koyama Gallery
Artist(s): Akio NIISATO
Date: 31 Jul - 12 Aug 2013

Born in 1977, Chiba prefecture. After leaving the Philosophy course of the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Sciences at Waseda University, he graduated from Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center in 2001. He is currently based in Toki City, Gifu prefecture. Among other awards, he received the grand prize in the 3rd Paramita Museum Ceramic Competition in 2008, while he has also received high acclaim in numerous exhibitions in Japan as well as overseas, including America, Italy, and Romania.
The title of this exhibition "Luminescence" is a term in physics which means "light emitted without heat" or "cold light". In Niisato's "light vessels" which can be said to express exactly that holes were made in highly translucent white porcelain, which were then filled with glaze before being fired. Through this technique called "hotarude" (transparent pattern) which can be likened to the light of fireflies in the way that the pattern floats due to its transparency in light, it is as if the works themselves are charged with luminosity, leaving a delicate, noble impression. In this exhibition, there will be a presentation of new innovations based on the "light vessel" series.
