1/1 Takashi Yasumura Solo Exhibition
by MISAKO & ROSEN
Location: Misako & Rosen
Date: 13 May - 10 Jun 2012

MISAKO & ROSEN is pleased to announce our first exhibition with photographer Takashi Yasumura. Yasumura has exhibited within Japan and abroad at institutions including the Mori Art Museum and Parco Art Gallery (both Tokyo) as well as the Deichtorhallen (Hamburg). Yasumura's photo book Domestic Scandals is widely acknowledged as one of the most important recent publications of Japanese photography.

The present exhibition consists of an entirely new body of work/ Speaking of the series, Yasumura reveals:

The exhibition title, 1/1, does not only refer to "being life-sized"; a one to one correspondence between an object's size and the size of it's representation;but also refers to the relationship between an object and that which represents it. The left "1" and the right "1" are based on the same thing, but different, such as a real table and a photo of the table. "/" represents something between them, something that mediates them, namely a camera. the right 1, which is a photographic image of the real thing, is now free from the real thing, but gains its own life. For example, the photograph has lost spatial depth and the viewer's eye gets caught in the surface.

Where in the photographs of Domestic Scandals, Yasumura took a rather long view, allowing the viewer to consider details only amidst a very particular suburban domestic context, with the present series, Yasumura generally follows a more mico vision, focusing on details to the point abstraction. Counterintuitively, the context-less images offer a wider array of possible literal readings. At once familiar and uncanny, the selection of 1/1 photographs represent a long-awaited continuation and development within Yasumura's practice.
