Anders Edstrom and Shimon Minamikawa Photographs and Paintings
by MISAKO & ROSEN
Location: Misako & Rosen
Artist(s): Shimon MINAMIKAWA, Anders EDSTROM
Date: 6 Nov - 4 Dec 2011

This exhibition pairs the paintings of artists Shimon Minamikawa with the photographs of Anders Edstrom. The work of Minamikawa and Edstrom differs significantly in form - perhaps a consequence of their respective media - yet at the same time the work of each occupies a similarly liminal zone. Each artist traffics in an in-betweenness which suggests the possibility of an exhibition both present and barely there.A key common element lies in the persistence of narrative in the work of both artists; a narrative that follows from a process of editing (Anders editing a set of photographs /Shimon editing experience prior to painting). For each artist this process takes precedence and results in bodies of work with a self-generative quality. The present exhibition itself is a consequence of Minamikawa and Edstrom's choice of collaborator and their gently radical, passive acceptance of what follows.

Anders Estrom and Shimon Minamikawa both live and work in Tokyo. Edstrom, born in Sweden (1966) has exhibited at venues including Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), Institute of Contemporary Art (Boston), Kunstmuseum (Wolfsburg), Fotomuseum Winterthur, Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Museum fur Moderne Kunst (Frankfurt am Main).

In addition to the publication of multiple photo books, Edstrom, in collaboration with C.W. Winter, is an internationally recognized filmmaker. Minamikawa has exhibited with MISAKO & ROSEN since 2006.Upcoming exhibitions include the Meguro Museum of Art (Tokyo) and the National Museum of Modern Art (Osaka). Additionally, Minamikawa has events planned with Nadiff (Tokyo)and will make a solo presentation as part of the  first edition of the Frieze Art Fair (New York) in the Spring of 2012.
