Yoshihiko Ueda (b.1957, Japanese) and Sarah Charlesworth (b. 1947, American) both depict still-life in photography, however, their approaches and outcomes are quite different and distinct. In terms of their reasons for using photography as a medium, Charlesworth explores the boundaries between images and symbols in her staged still-life; whilst Ueda meticulously observes and realistically represents his chosen subjects.
In Charlesworth's 'Simple Text' (2005) and 'Neverland' (2003), she characterises her playful and thoughtful insights as a conceptual artist does. She has stated that she would rather use the photographic field as a meditative space in order to either attach or detach meanings to or from her selected objects.
'Quinault' is a series of photographs by Ueda who went into the depths of sacred forests known by their Native American names, 'Hoh' and 'Quinault'. Along with his other series, 'Flowers', Ueda's photographs conjure up a moment and the momentum of his subjects' lives, regardless of being natural or artificial.
