Artist(s): Helmut NEWTON
Date: 18 Sep - 27 Oct 2012
I first encountered the Private Property, which comprises 45 gelatin silver prints in three suites, at Helmut Newton’s apartment in Monte Carlo in October 1993. Not until then did I see the photographer’s original prints I was enthralled by the simple suites that his elegant images were enclosed in. His assistant kindly showed me one by one from the suites, however, my mind was preoccupied with an ongoing collaborated project by Newton and Galerie Sho at that time.
I have worked with Newton and dealt in his over one-hundred photographs, mainly nudes, for more than two decades. I was lucky enough to have had my second chance to view the Private Property. What I found was how brilliantly he had captured people and objects with his genuine interests through crystallising their original cultures and backgrounds. It never be exaggerating that the Private Property is the collection of his masterpieces that represent the world-renowned photographer. These images speak out beyond fashion or nude photography, in which he was often categorised.
Throughout three stages of ‘Helmut Newton: Private Property’ show, each of 15 original prints will be shown in minimum white-cube. I would be most grateful if you could enjoy the world of Helmut Newton, his enduring style and outstanding aesthetic in the history of photography.
