Date: 6 Jun - 18 Jul 2009

"With touch of oil pigments I have expressed variety of girls standing against the background of flower patterns which always come in first place to start with. Gradually, the background colors have been transformed into human figures in a silhouette. I love this process, and in such a method my work stands by itself. Also, in the stage which I transfer sketches to whatever the object is, the result comes in simple line drawings only. I want that part to be a real work of mine.

I have done a dozen of paintings which girls' bodies carry tattoos, some painted figures, and fishnet pantyhose. In extension to this approach some works have been produced as blank human figures with numerous patterns inside.

In 2003 I completed the painting which Greek goddess Chloris had transformed into Roman goddess Flora. In the same theme I produced a film work in 2004 which the girl assimilating flower patterns would have come to expose on the wall fully covered by black lace with the flower patterns. I showed this film work in Osaka only, and was eager to release it in other locations as well. The past film source is the essence in relation with my updated work of the patterns on the human figures. A series of paper tanks covered by the lace could fall into the same vein. "

The title of "Map" or "Chizu" in Japanese is composed of the two words: "Chi" is "background" and "Zu" is "figure". "Chi" can be seen as "Zu", and it might be vice versa, or even "Zu" entirely conquers "Chi".

The Matsuyama's latest solo exhibition, "Map" will be formed in several different media: typical girls figure paintings in oil and acrylic materials, sculptures of tanks made out of paper, and the preceding video installation.
