ARATANIURANO is proud to announce "lightedge, face 11", a solo exhibition by Co Watanabe, to be held from January 22 to February 26. This exhibition is his second solo show, four years from the "face" exhibition held M 2007.
In recent years. Go Watanabe (born in Hyogo prefecture in 19751 has presented a light box piece of portraits digitally printed on semi-transparent film that were created by adhering graphics from photos taken of people's skin onto 3-D forms created on a computer. These pieces expressed the "face" of a realm unclassifiable as either human or object. exuding a strong presence and leaving a lasting impression reviewers. Also. as a pre-event for this year's Aichi Triennale. his solo exhibition was shown at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art. New ground-breaking animations were presented here I "Discovering Contemporary Art 6: Go Watanabe Shirai Hanaabi: lianas/W. Aidd Prefectural Museum of Ard.
Watanabe has been active in Asia in recent years. participating in the "Media City Seoul" exhibition in Korea (zoos. Seoul Museum of Artl. the "Beautiful New World: Contem-porary Culture from Japan" exhibition (2007. Bei(ing. Guangdong Museum of Art-Guangzhou). and the "Have You Eaten Yet? — 2007 Asian Art Biennial" exhibition in Taiwan (me, National Taiwan Museum at Fine Arts. Taichung). In addition. last year's 'Big in Japan' exhibition in Lithuania. which highlighted his new portrait pieces, attracted much attention. Watanabe is a young artist accomplishing impressive achievements both domestically and internation-ally.
This much-awaited second exhibition will center around new animations of scenery created from the melding of various surfaces based an motifs taken from familiar objects found in interior spaces and indoors. Through his animation and digital pieces. which are mild-paced. darkly misty in color and shrouded by a quiet air. Watanabe expresses altera-tion of surfaces by adhering images of an object's surface to frameworks created from computer generated 3-0 forms and by cutting out and dismantling parts of a room's spatial compostwon.
In Watanabe's arustm world, surfaces autonomously appear apart from the "form' that supports it, so that one cannot distinguish an object as itself and cannot fix a meaning or alignment, which brings forth a single realm and unique scenery. Also, by installing pieces in a multi-view perspective around the gallery's exhibition space, he aims to unfold scenes where wme and distance MIS freely. Though moving away from hLa well-known portran senes shown in his last solo exhibtwon, 'face", this exhibition can be understood as a new approach to the common theme of borderlines as explored by the artist. This exhibition is sure to change the viewers' awareness and consciousness toward familiar spaces and objects.
We appreciate your cooperatton with the publicity for this exhibition. and thank you in advance for your kind support.
