"Tatzu Nishi alias Tatzu Oozu alias Tatsurou Bashi alias Tazro Nishino" Commemorative Exhibition
by Arataniurano
Location: ARATANIURANO
Artist(s): Tatzu NISHI
Date: 17 Dec 2010 - 8 Jan 2011

ARATANIURANO is proud to present a commemorative exhibition for the publication of Tatzu Nishi's artwork collection, "Tatzu Nishi alias Tatzu Oozu alias Tatsurou Bashi alias Tazro Nishino". This exhibition will be held from December 17 to January 8. Tatzu Nishi is internationally renowned for his large-scale public projects.

For example, his works transform familiar public items, such as a city's monument or street lights, into an object placed in a private space, like a living room, by surrounding these items with makeshift buildings. Based in Berlin, he has presented his work in numerous places around the world, including the Kalder Art Projects (2009) in Sydney, the Estuaire 2009, Nantes/Saint-Nazaire (France), and The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2005). In recent years, his domestic exposure has been increasing with exhibitions at the Aichi Triennale 2010, the Mori Art Museum, and the Maison Hermes.

Recently, he has been presenting photography pieces that captures the actualization of ideas that are difficult to show in long-term exhibitions. In these, Tatzu Nishi has captured ideas that are beyond everyday life and that stimulates the viewer, such as a person walking with furniture piled up on his head, and a Buddha statue made from Tofu that spouts a fountain of soy sauce. Using the themes of "Laughter, Violence, and Sexy", Nishi Tatzu has continued to birth forth new dimensions into this world.

This autumn, an artwork collection book that covers his overseas and domestic works spanning 14 years from 1997 was published by Akio Nagasawa Publishing to coincide with his participation in the Aichi Triennale 2010. For this book, 34 projects were carefully selected out of projects that have not been widely viewed due to their limited time periods. Also, powerful documentary photographs are used to show the trajectory of Nishi Tatzu's activities as an artist. In December, a special edition book with original photography will be released for sale in limited numbers.

To commemorate the publication of the artwork collection book, this exhibition will show original photographs from the special edition and photography pieces that includes new works.

On the first night, December 17, there will be a publication party with the artist and other related parties in attendance. Then, on December 18, there will be a special talk event with Nishi Tatzu and the artist, Mr. Makoto Aida, as a guest.

We hope that you will enjoy Nishi Tatzu's works of intense vivacity during this holiday season.
