Mountains and Valleys
by Arataniurano
Location: Arataniurano Gallery
Artist(s): Mana KONISHI, Go WATANABE, Yuichi YOKOYAMA
Date: 14 Nov - 12 Dec 2009

Mana Konishi, known for depicting actual places as mystical landscapes, garnered attention by receiving the 2006 VOCA award. Recently, she has also been working on portrait pieces, carving out a path in new frontiers. In this exhibition, new paintings based on photographs taken at various mountains by Konishi herself will be shown. Konishi's landscapes have also been used as the album design for lyricist Matsumoto Riku's 40th anniversary compilation album scheduled for release in December.

Yuichi Yokoyama's use of minimalist pop color schemes and structure, along with his unique perspective, makes his drawings and comics seem as if they are reports from an alien being, and bring tranquility and excitement. Yokoyama is a figure who nullifies the boundaries of illustration/comics/art, and he has been invited to show at many exhibitions including "Roppongi Crossing" (2007, Mori Art museum) and the currently showing "City_net Asia" (Soul Museum of Art). Also, "Outdoor" (Koudansha) and "Baby Boom" (East Press) have recently been released. For his first exhibition at ARATANIURANO, Yokoyama himself has selected a vast array of drawings to b displayed.

Go Watanabe has attracted attention through his "Boundary" themed portrait series that uses pictures, 3DCG and backlighting to create protraits that differ only in the constracts of each individual's surface layer of skin. He has participated in many international exhibitions such as: "very very human" (2005, Toyota Municipal Museum of Art), "Seoul International Media Art Biennale" (2006, Seoul Museum of Art), "Asian Art Biennale" (2007, National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts), and "Big in Japan" (2009, CAC, Lithuania). This exhibition will be the first public showing of "loop" (2004) in the Kanto Region. This piece can be said to be the origin of Watanabe's series of works, and is an installation piece using animation, photographs, and models. In January of the following year, new and old film pieces by Watanabe are scheduled to be presented at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art (exhibition room 6) as a pre-event for the Aichi Triennial.
