Mana Konishi's landscapes and portraits are painted with graciously unconstrained and sensual brushstrokes, as well as a unique sense of color. Her painting distances itself from viewers with its creation of a serene and unreal world of uncertainty.
In creating her works, Konish first selects photographs from numerous snapshots for motifs and layouts. These photographs serve to give a general sense of what to draw, and are merely a starting point for her creative expression. Her interest is not to paint these scenes and figures realistically, but rather to fill them with unique stories, creating a seemingly illusory world for her paintings.
Rather than images that would give a clear view of the finished painting, selected photographs are nondescript. Konishi choose photographs that feel oddly incomplete, and imagines new stories for them. Moving her brush stimulates more throughly the artist's subconscious world of imager, and paintings become visualized through this process.
