Gallery Terra Tokyo is pleased to announce the solo exhibition by Dutch artist, Ruud van Empel.
The work of Empel gives us the impression like painting, however, it is actually well structured with intentional arrangement and expresses the collaged world in the photograph. The taken photographs are combined, and the imaginary figures and plants are created. the plant of men in buckram and fictitious is invented. You can feel a vivid hue, exotic atmosphere, and a mysterious charm that seems real but not real from the work of Empel produced with "Purity innocence" as the theme. This exhibition will announce total of 14 works including 12 new works.
“Thomas Struth meets Henri Rousseau‐how’s that for a formula?”
‐Ben Davis, associate editor of Artnet magazine, from the article “Phyco‐Social Still‐Life”
“Innocence is the element I’m interested in here. Children are not yet very individual, so they can be used to demonstrate the idea without making it too personal or specific. I use nature as the background, because I don’t want it to be in a specific place or city. It has to be neutral so the viewer can bring his/her own thoughts to it. So by using children the motif remains more open, more timeless. I’m trying to portray a moment of daydreaming, the moment in which you’re unaware of yourself. That’s the place I’m trying to reach.”
‐Ruud van Empel from the future interview of magazine “Art_icle” September 2008 issue Gallery Terra Tokyo
