Yuka Tsuruno Collection
by Yuka Tsuruno
Location: TOLOT/ Heuristic Shinonome
Artist(s): Candida HOFER, José PARLá
Date: 6 Dec 2014 - 14 Mar 2015

From the 6th of December to the 14th of March, YUKA TSURUNO GALLERY will be exhibiting the YUKA TSURUNO COLLECTION in exhibition space A, TOLOT/ Heuristic Shinonome. The artists featured in the exhibit are José Parlá, painter based in New York, and an established contemporary photographer Candida Höfer.

Parlá's uniquely expressive painting style, which incorporates elements of both language and writing, has been winning international acclaim. His latest projects include a collaboration with French artist JR for the 11th Havana Biennial in Cuba entitled "Wrinkles of the City, Havana Cuba",  "Diary of Brooklyn", a mural painting commissioned by the Barclays Center in Downtown Brooklyn, "Nature of Language" a mural commissioned by architecture firm SNOHETTA for the North Carolina State University (2013),  curated by PopRally, Parlá was part of a panel discussion at MoMA, New York (2013). However, perhaps his most notable appearance recently is the permanent installment of his painting, One: Union of the Senses, in the World Trade Center that had just opened this November.

Our exhibition will feature his 16m painting, Haru Ichiban / First Wind of Spring / Through the Tokyo Alleyways - Her Voice Sings.., which he created during his residency in Tokyo, in 2013. This painting is one of the significant pieces that led to the creation of One: Union of the Senses.

Candida Höfer is a world-renowned German contemporary photographer, born in 1944, currently based in Cologne, Germany. She is a leading figure in contemporary photography, and known as one of the Becher students along with Andreas Gursky, Thomas Struth, and Thomas Ruff. Her symmetrically composed photographs of the indoors of large architectural buildings have received international attention, and in 2003 she represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. Höfer's works have been exhibited in museums like the Kunsthalle Basel, the Kunsthalle Berne, the Portikus, Frankfurt am Main, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Power Plant, Toronto, the Kunsthaus Bregenz and the Museum Ludwig, Cologne. Her works are also collected by Centre Pompidou (France), Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), Kunstmuseum Basel (Switzerland) among other museums. This exhibit will feature 4 works from the first solo exhibition she held in Japan this year, at YUKA TSURUNO GALLERY.

We look forward to your visit on this special opportunity to see large-scale works of two internationally acclaimed contemporary artists complimented by TOLOT’s distinct architectural interiors.
