From November 22nd to 30th a collaboration event between Japanese contemporary artist Eugene Kangawa and the global pioneer of contemporary music Terry Riley will be held in TOLOT/heuristic SHINONOME. ( Tokyo, Japan) Terry Riley is a legendary artist, who is known to the world as a truly important figure in music history. As he has been refraining his overseas performances due to his health condition, his performance in Japan is in a way a miracle and is anticipated to receive a lot o f attention from home and abroad.
This collaboration was made happen by a shared understanding of the creative process between the two artists, which they recognized while exchanging e -mails. Therefore this collaboration between the artists, transcending nationality and generation but pursuing the same concept, will be a historical moment: from the legendary hit, “in C” to the latest work, “Aleph” Terry Riley will be giving a beautiful performance with his grand piano, prepared piano and synthesizer, accompanying “from the future” and “After the War”two grand video art works by Eugene Kangawa that uses 10 multi screens.
Within the same venue as the performance, Eugene Kangawa's video installation will be held from November 22nd to November 30th. The installation will exhibit his past works and his newest work, which has been shot using wearable camera+Oculus(Head Mount Display) such as GOPro/A500.
Artist profile
Eugene Kangawa was born in the U.S. in 1989 and is currently based in Tokyo. He presents installation works using different media including photography and sculpture, with a particular focus on video. His delicate and airy videos that emphasize process and archive, as exemplified by the group of videos entitled Desport that was produced as a collaborative research on sports with multiple academic communities, have attracted significant attention. He has participated in exhibitions in and out of Japan since he was a student, and was invited to give a talk at the Ginza Graphic Gallery (ggg) as a leading young designer. He has also established ON, inc. (object of null, inc.) to carry out collaborative research on urban planning and technology, as well as software design. His participation in a project led by the Serpentine Gallery illustrates the public interest in Kangawa as an artist of the next generation.
