by Yuka Tsuruno
Location: Yuka Tsuruno
Date: 12 Feb - 5 Mar 2014

Yusuke Yamatani is a photographer born in 1985 in Nigata, Japan, currently based in Tokyo. He has been working for Gaien Studio after receiving BA in Philosophy from Rissho University, then relocated in Nagasaki where he met Tomatsu Shomei and other no-name photographers. He gained actual knowledge and technique of photography by interacting with them and getting started as an artist. Since then, with his sensitive perspective as one of outsiders, he has been photographing of every day life in underground communities by integrating himself into their life by living and hanging out with them, traveling various cities such as a squat in Milano and punks in South East Asia. Yamatani states about his works that "The importance of information, place, and relationship were lost and all things are tend to be uniformed in this time of the world. It may be my job to record the chaos and reality that still exist in street and underground."

Tsugi no your e, On to the next night in English, is the title of his first self-published monograph came out in 2013, a record of the days he spent with friends met in Osaka where he finally reached after wandering around Japan in 2010. The book was well received internationally and immediate sellout. In this exhibition, the first large scale solo show for him, the 51 prints from Tsugi no your e will be displayed. Also, the second edition of the "Tsugi no your e" will be published by Yuka Tsuruno Gallery.

Yamatani started exhibiting his works in various group shows since 2011, Recent exhibitions include "Untitled", NADiff a/p/a/r/t bar MUDAI (Tokyo), TOKYO CULTUART by BEAMS (Tokyo), Le PhotobookFest Box of Dummies Prize (Paris). He won the Rokko International Photo Festival Aware "ZINE/BOOK GALLERY! 2013" (Osaka).
