Studying oil painting at Tama Art University, Matsubara has completed the installation work filling a space for the graduation exhibition, and received the great attention with it as an innovative artist.
After a debut as an artist, he has showed various techniques, from painting to sculpture and ready-made installation, so that some people said he's the next Martin Kippenberger, the German artist. However, since he adopt a marionette show into his works in 2009, Matsubara has expressed his unique art world unlike any other, and also showed a woodcut.
In this exhibition, 'a choice of direction' can be found through a plural group of work, woodcut, painting and mixed media photography. With the theme 'sleep and dream', the exhibition gives a peaceful atmosphere unlike previous works in a mood of dark and melancholy. Furthermore, his new works are even humorous, and some of parts show minimalism with abstract shapes, but they are more emotional than before.
