The award will be presented every other year starting in 2013 which is the 80th anniversary of Nissan. For the first year, Nissan Art Award 2013 will be provided to Japanese contemporary artists. The intent is to showcase work that represents Japan's distinctive culture. Nissan aims to help sustain and further develop Japan's vibrant arts culture, which would eventually lead to new inspirations for the society as well as for the company.
From among the several dozen candidates, eight finalists were chosen at the end of May 2013 after thorough consideration by five globally enlightened juries. The finalists will create new art work with the support of Nissan. In September, the new art works from the eight artists will be exhibited in Yokohama.
