Taka Ishii Gallery Photography/Film is pleased to present “Shakyō Rōjin Nikki,” our third solo exhibition with Nobuyoshi Araki this year. The exhibition will take place over a five day period from October 6 to 10, 2011. The show will feature 20 new pieces from a series of works Araki photographed over the 3 month period between the Great East Japan Earthquake on March 11, up until June 11, 2011.
The works presented in the show have been created using black and white negative film which Araki himself distressed by scratching. This is a new approach for Araki, and such pieces created from the scratched negatives are distinct within Araki’s vast oeuvre.
I’m linking it to Junichiro Tanizaki’s “Fūten Rōjin Nikki.” If it doesn’t have a date, it’s not a photograph. And also, Shikō Munakata used to carve letters, right?

As Araki himself is certain, the new works created through this approach yet again opens a path towards a fresh artistic world. Please take this opportunity to observe the latest works created by Araki, whom in recent years continues to exercise his artistic creativity with increased vigor.
