etude no.39 instant noodle
by YUKA Contemporary
Location: YUKA Contemporary
Artist(s): mamoru
Date: 9 Apr - 7 May 2011

mamoru has developed a series works "etude" that transforms everyday objects and practices into "sound art" or "means to create sound art" by decoding/recodind them. In this exhibition, mamoru will develop the new idea of "etude" using instant noodle.

Born in Osaka, Japan in 1977, mamoru has been playing keyboards instruments since age 7 and has mostly been self-taught. He moved to New York City in 1996 to study music. There, he was exposed to improvisational and non-Western music. As a result, mamoru became truly aware of the aesthetics of traditional Japanese music/sound, particularly its distrinctive tonality and rhythm. In 2001, mamoru moved back to Japan after completing B.F.A program at The City University of New York to expand and explore these ideas using contemporary instruments and found objects. He started producing sound installations and improvisational performances as a sound artist, mainly performing at alternative venues, galleries, and museums both within Japan and abroad.

The installations involved the idea of a "multi source, multi channel" system, which consists of several loops of audio samples with independent speakers, mixed in the space.

The performances are like temporal sculptures. Acoustic and electronic sounds are created imporvisationally with such instruments as fretless-guitar or self-made-harp, bells, water, voice, sine-wave, and filed recordings. These sounds are then captured on stage by an array of unsynchonized loop-samples and replayed at different cycles with heavy reverb. The resulting effect is a soundscape, sustaining a certain mood yet constantly changing.

mamoru has collaborated with a wide range of artists, painters, photographers, sculptors, video artist, and architects.
