Imura art gallery, tokyo is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Yu Kiwanami titled 'WORKS from "Appetite for painting".
Kiwanami's creations, characterized by clear constructing with sharp outline and flat coloration, have been showing a remarkable transformation for the last few years due to getting narrativity, shading and artistic effect. The thing his previous and current paintings have in common is a figure without face. Kiwanami says that it is 'obscure portrait: It is no one, in other word, it is everyone'. On the other hand, through the adding of shading and artistic effect, and with the same method to apply sparse layers, the boldly omitted backgrounds from the past paintings have come to be depicted as space reminiscent of particular stories in the new series of works.
What is "Appetite for painting"? The combination of unidentified figures and specific backgrounds composed with delicate layers of paint constructs space with strong impression and atmosphere drifting around there. This exhibition reveals the latest process of his artistic evolvement, adding new works to his ex exhibition"Appetite for painting", held in imura art gallery, kyoto.
