Visual Memoir by Edward Levinson
by Gallery Tosei
Location: Gallery Tosei
Date: 1 Aug - 30 Aug 2014

Every picture has a story behind it. Wandering looking for images, both in Japan and abroad, I become a character in those stories. I immerse myself in the feeling and essence of the place, seeing not just with the eyes, but experiencing with all the senses. The results of these photo adventures, some planned carefully and some left to chance, create a slow image stream. From pristine nature, to parks and manmade edifices, the various scenes become treasured tales bound together in a journal of memories.
The photographs are made with pinhole cameras. The Zen-like empty space within the simple dark box records the images gradually through long exposures. This mirrors the seeing tempo of the photographer and viewers’ eyes and hearts.
- Edward Levinson, 2014
