Date: 11 Jun - 10 Jul 2011
Since the beginning of the 1990s, Yasue Kodama has tried to represent her fresh and dynamic perception she got through her daily life and in nature to explore the possibility of illusionary space in painting. First she started with a series of still life paintings, then her work turned into complete abstract with a few colors in white space like Sansui painting. After 2000, some figurative elements like leaves of tree, cherry blossoms and gold fishes appeared in half abstract image. in the last 5 years, her style became more transparent with multi-layered subtle colors dealing with different subject matters in nature like snow, woods, flowers, willows, but in very abstract way.
The title of the show is Watatsumi meaning the god of the sea in Japan's mythology. The central pieces at the show are a triptych showing deep green sea with lapping waves, but half abstract without the horizon. The image changes depends on how you perceive it.
Kodama graduated from the Kyoto City University of Arts. She lives and works in Kyoto.
