#008 Opening the Form | Makoto Kusakawa
by 3331 Arts Chiyoda
Location: 3331 Gallery
Artist(s): Makoto KUSAKAWA
Date: 17 Apr - 15 May 2011

Kusakawa is an artist who expresses the beauty of forms created through inter-relation of fresh colours and lines, as well as figurative images, which are built up in numerous layers.

In this exhibition select drawings chosen from a range of many hundreds and a series of oil paintings are presented.

Kusakawa's work is constructed through the interplay of surface and line. He draws the layers of the surface, which form an essential base material, then with great strength builds layers of lines, giving rise to abstract forms across the canvas.

Thick lines which seem to dance across the canvas, with vivid bright colours, form a strong impression, amongst which a shifting visage of images, from plant forms to the shape of someone planting rice in the fields, can be discerned. Each line which emerges through the interaction of these two layers plays upon the imagination of the viewer.

Kusakawa's aesthetic reflects the rich nature of his roots in Miyagi prefecture, and his connection to the earth. From drawings to actual oil paintings, what kind of process does this work emerge from? What does Kusakawa try to plant in the viewer? Engulfed in layers of time and colour, we invite you to feel the message which flows from this work.
