#65
by Take Ninagawa
Location: Take Ninagawa
Artist(s): Shinro OHTAKE
Date: 7 Aug - 3 Sep 2010

Take Ninagawa is pleased to announce the opening of Shinro Ohtake, "#65," the first public exhibition of the latest in the artist's ongoing series of mixed-media scrap books first begun in 1977.

Filled with page after page of unique collages and taking on sculptural proportions through their density of accumulate material, the scrap books have been a central element in Ohtake's artistic practice, with each work taking over a year to complete. A then-complete set of scrap books - 1 through 64 - were displayed in 2006 in Ohtake's mid-career retrospective "Zen-Kei" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, and the same installation will be included in the upcoming 8th Gwangju Biennale, opening September 3 in Gwangju. However, due to their difficulty of display and documentation, the scrap books remain under-appreciated by the general public.

#65 (2010) is the first scrap book Ohtake has completed since "Zen-Kei," and will be the only work on display in this exhibition. Additionally, the gallery has commissioned the documentation of each page in the new scrap book. The resulting images will be displayed on a monitor in the gallery, offering visitors a rare opportunity to experience an Ohtake scrap book in full detail. A limited edition large-format poster with full documentation of #65 will also be on sale at the gallery.
