Take Ninagawa is pleased to announce the opening of Aki Sasamoto's second solo exhibition with the gallery, E_O. The exhibition comprises a multimedia sculptural environment and a series of performances by the artist over the course of the exhibition period.
Drawing from dance, theatre and the visual arts, Sasamoto is known for making multimedia sculptural environments in which she stages live performances. Often incorporating modified found objects and audio-visual equipment, the sculptural environments stand alone as formal investigations into the everyday arrangement of space, but take on new significance when activated by the performances.
According to Sasamoto, E_O represents "ego without gravity." Using childhood nightmares and boxing routines as starting points, this performance/environment explores the gaps between self-perception, belief and actuality. In its layout the sculptural environment evokes both a boxing ring and the common circular visualization of the Enneagram of Personality, which charts the dynamics between nine interconnected personality types. The sculptural elements are made from materials as diverse as mesh fencing, found toilet seats, and microphones attached to flexible piping. In entering the environment, visitors enter into a disorienting arena that challenges conventional structures of personal space and perspective, and the relations between viewer and object.
Incorporating both prepared and spontaneous material and bodily movements, the artist's live performances within the sculptural environment further elucidate the inherent geometry between eyesight, the Enneagram, muscles and death.
