I'm standing beside the water
by Bambinart Gallery
Location: Bambinart Gallery
Artist(s): Midori MITAMURA
Date: 16 Apr - 15 May 2011

Mitamura (b. 1964 in Aichi prefecture) has exhibited her works in many countries of the world since she started her carrier as an artist in 1993. In 2006, she held a solo exhibition in Secession (Austria) which a Japanese artist held solo exhibition for the first time since Nobuyoshi Araki held it in 1997. Also she has participated many group exhibitions held in Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, MOSCOW MUSEUM OF MODERN ART (Russia) and Museum of Modern Art in Salzburg (Austria). She will participate the Artist in residence program in Melbourne (Australia) this April.

Mitamura's works are "the three-dimensional drama that spectators can step into". Her installation work, layouting photography, film, furniture and small objects like book illustrations, related to her own memory concord with our memory as if reading a novel. A glimpse looming between the lines reveals that the time runs away like sands through our fingers.

This exhibition will show the photography taken beside the water from the series of "empty element" and "Frame" which both she photographed on the way going to exhibitions and artist in residence overseas.

"I am always walking by the water alone when I visit an unfamiliar town.
I can see the water at anywhere people live, and it accepts me like an old friend.
When I’m standing beside the water, I always realize I'm coming to somewhere far from my birthplace.
Yet this water is connected to the water at somewhere I have ever lived.
I brought myself here by my foot.
I look back the way I have walked for a while, and think tenderly of time’s layer of my life."

note
When I reviewed photos taken in my journeys, I found many photos I have taken at waterfronts.
When I go abroad for exhibitions or projects, I often walk alone by the river, sea or lake in the town, although usually I do not have enough time to walk slowly in the town.
I also aware of many images of the water in my installations and video works.
The water always gives me the time that happens to stop and look back my life in the moment.
And then when you are watching these photos, I may be standing beside the water in the town I have never been to.
