Location: Gallery 21
Artist(s): Motohiko HASUI
Date: 30 Nov 2010 - 10 Jan 2011

An exhibition on fashion and landscapes projecting esthetic value and sense of two cities, by two French photographers establishing their own status in New York and a Japanese photographer raising his career in Tokyo after some years’ study in London. An exhibition to experiment identity of two cities and to overlook photographic expression in two genres like “fashion” , a mirror of today’s desire, and “landscapes” extracting potential will and power of the place. Today’s relief of the two cities is expressed in color for “fashion” and in black and white for “landscape”.

Innocent position
Fashion photography needs to express epoch-leading style and its ideal situation. Expression of product image often gives stress to the photographer, who wishes to appeal his (her) creativity. But such restriction and friction sometimes makes photographer break through to an excellent result. Sophie’ s photography sends a clear and strong message to you, as it is quite different from the fashion photography currently seen, or situated at the opposite side of people’ s desire for product, and ascetic and innocent more or less. Reticent position, without anything more, that can be her way of photographic expression.

Cool Tokyo
Tokyo has had a special step of progression in fashion, together with continuous and systematic change of the city itself. A number of creators appeared at Paris collection in the 20th century, and pop styling has influenced the fashion world at real time in the 21st century. HASUI has immediately found the value and code of Tokyo fashion, which changes freely and lightly every time. He expresses his identity in a cool vision, and the identity of Tokyo city with vision without prejudice. He holds the object in the middle of sight but not at main part. That is the way he sees his future works by keeping a certain distance and space against the object.

Motohiko HASUI

Luxury time
What will you feel if all the people disappear from a big city? It is the simulation of Jean-Michel BERTS. You are one of passers-by in a big city, but what will you feel if the city is exclusively for you? Jean-Michel’ s works show you sub-consciousness as to be more intimate with different spots of the city you are living in. You can watch what you want with your rhythm, and you can have a landscape exclusively for you. Such a gorgeous experience is now realized with his photography.

Jean-Michel BERTS
Despite a promising scientific career, Jean-Michel BERTS chose a different path – to became a photographer. With his first Rolleiflex, he became sensitive to the effects of light. Since the eighties he has worked as a still life photographer for several well-known cosmetics and perfume brands. While involved in this field, he pursued a body of work with more personal focus, called City Portraits. To achieve this unique rendering, it took him more than one year of work and research. The richness of Jean-Michel BERTS photographs also comes from his technique. He uses the method of Ansel Adams called The Zone System. With an exposure time between nine seconds and ten minutes, this method of overexposing negative and under-developing them allows a strong density, enhancing the contrast in black and white. Started the series “City portrait” in 2005 with Paris, New York, Tokyo and Venice.
