Thirty-five percent of Chicago, Illinois (USA) residents identify themselves as African American, or Black. The majority of Chicago's Black population is concentrated in an area known as "South Side Chicago.

In Chicago's Black South Side, surveillance cameras are ubiquitous.Cameras record all activity at all banking institutions.Surveillance cameras record activity at hotels, motels, colleges and universities. Traffic lights and Smart Sensors capable of both "watching" and "listening" automatically record auto traffic through intersections. Most businesses record their patrons. Insurance companies provide substantial monetary deductions and discounts when surveillance cameras are installed on the property.

Meanwhile, local colleges, universities, research institutions, political consultants and community organizers dissect virtually every aspect of day-to-day life of South Side residents.
Dissection also defines Surveillance.

SOUTH SIDE SURVEILLANCE discusses:
• Land-use policies vs. the body politic.
• The collision of Privacy rights and Security, including "homeland security."
• The role of Technology in evolving definitions of Community, Race and Other.
