Ginza Graphic Gallery will hold an exhibition in October 2010 entitled, “Seas and Mountains and Norito Shinmura.”

Born in a fisherman’s house on Ukashima—a small island only 8 km around, located in the Seto Inland Sea, Shinmura grew up surrounded by nature. Drawing upon his childhood experiences, Shinmura has turned heads for his nature-themed works including visual works featuring his family business (Shinmura Fisheries), newspaper ads for the Yamaguchi Prefectural Fisheries Cooperation Associations, and Muji Campground posters. Shinmura’s deep-rooted childhood experiences can be seen in the messages conveyed to nature incorporated into his works.

As suggested by the exhibition title, the first floor will be themed after the “seas” and the basement after “mountains,” with posters, photographs, images, actual boats, plants and the like comprising the exhibition. With this year being designated by the U.N. as the International Year of Biodiversity and COP 10 being held in Nagoya this October, people are taking an even greater interest in biodiversity. The newspaper ad that conveys the message, “The Fish in the sea are Nurtured by Forests” is one of Shinmura’s early works. Even back then he was aware of the importance of biodiversity.
