Jomon Double Bind House
by Aisho Miura Arts
Location: Aisho Miura Arts
Artist(s): Harutaka MATSUMOTO
Date: 5 Mar - 2 Apr 2011

After he finished the graduate program at Tama Art University in 1986, he received a French Government Scholarship and studied under Christian Boltanski at Ecole Nationale Supèrieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA) in 1987-89. He was sent to New York by Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs in 2003-04, and has exhibited various artworks through photography, movie, painting, and sculpture.

“We make our own rules, which bind our life.”
Being aware of the fact strongly affects his way of expression; he sets no rule or limit on the materials he uses. He binds a house with a rope, to clarify the things restrict us.

In recent years, he has focused on the project “Jomon Double Bind House.” “Clothing, food, and housing” are the essential for our modern life. By binding a house, he expresses ironically how “housing” has taken freedom away from us since Jomon era. The subject of “living” (things to sustain a life) in a wide sense has caused the social problems happening to us today, such as the population growth, environmental destruction, and Lehman Shock. It seems that he has foreseen those matters in his project.

In this exhibition, as a part of his significant project “Jomon Double Bind House,” we are going to bind AISHOU MIURA ARTS (on March 5th). In addition to his past works, we exhibit the models and two-dimensional works produced in the process of the project. He noticed the problems of the rules we have created, and has confronted them with visualizing what bind us through various ways of expression. Harutaka Matsumoto throws a question on standards of value and new rules to be established from now.

We will bind the gallery. We have a reception with the artist on March 5th.
We hope you will come and enjoy live “Jomon Double Bind House.”
