In recent years, Yamada has won various competitions and awards, exhibiting internationally, creating stronger works over time. Yamada works with subtractive method, deleting the words and characters from a photo and dissimilating the real images.
In this exhibition, third solo show this year, Yamada will exhibit new works focused on the Pacific War that we only know from the image, using "frame" as the key word. Documentary photos record the history and convey, on the other hand it has been leveraged to distort the truth.
The images that lost its symbol or icon gives us the feeling of becoming free from the disguised history or the twisted memory that have put from the media. Moreover, it makes us realize that we are forced to be involved in the metanarrative. Yamada has been considering about how the image relates to our recognition, not only in the field of photography but also in various recording mediums.
Comment from the artist:
“ How the war has been seen and interpreted is different from which part you stand to. I cannot say which is wrong and what is right. But the thing that is for certain is the fear, that we will be involved whether you want it or not. I was walking down Shibuya and saw the poster of the war movie, played by Koji Yakusho. I cannot comment on the movie as I have not seen it yet, but I found "war" is still a very attractive story for people.”
