mitsuo - out of his four scrapbooks
by Gallery éf
Location: Gallery éf
Artist(s): Takanori ISHII, Hideki SHIOZAWA
Date: 1 Jan - 24 Jan 2010

In the summer of 2006, four old scrapbooks were discovered at the house of a long-established family in Tokyo. The books contained substantial numbers of negative films and prints. The person who took those photographs was a young man who died at the age of 37. Using a medium format camera, he had taken photographs of portraits of his family and scenery in the 1940s to 1950s, and organised the photographs in his scrapbooks.

This exhibition is derived from his legacy of monochrome negative films and prints, and it aims to relate the past, present and future of photography.

For this exhibition, two professional photographers, Takanori Ishii and Hideki Shiozawa, have printed the negative film themselves by hand. They regard manual printing as a very important means of art expression. By printing manually in the darkroom, they express their creative impulses inspired by the original faded prints.

In addition, Horiuchi Color Ltd, a professional film processing and printing company, will use advanced digital technology to reprint the photographs that no longer have negatives. Using a high-resolution laser printer to produce Lambda prints, images printed over 50 years ago will reappear as new.
