Opposite Bank
by Gallery MoMo (Ryogoku)
Location: Gallery MoMo (Ryogoku)
Artist(s): Kumiko MUROI
Date: 26 May - 23 Jun 2012

GALLERY MoMo Ryogoku is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Kumiko Muroi, titled Opposite bank from May 26th to June 23rd, 2012.The exhibition features 30 paintings included in “doxastic,” which received an award for the best works in the thirty-first selected incentive prize from Sompo Japan Museum of Art in 2012.

Muroi’s early works are reminiscent of the influence from the style of Terry Winters and Gerhard Richter, however, her recent works have improved her own style by depicting between abstract and realistic paintings in the multilayered and strong background. Pursuing the style holds the line against the realistic paintings that dominate the recent Japanese art world, she has met the challenges one faces in this severe environment.

In the past, Muroi said that the works are included in seeing, hearing and smelling in my heat and they are related to the memories through my body. She also states that the works have tried to work to viewers’ memories through the material such as canvas and paintings, and she tries to creates a screen viewer can find other things every time they look at the work. The artist hope every viewer can find out their own things from the works by taking their time to face off against them through the action of seeing and image their own interpretation.
